Today, when it comes to building materials, two of the most popular choices to consider are Plyboard and Plywood. Both are very popular and widely used for many different purposes. However, distinguishing these two types of wood is not easy. Let’s find out the difference between these two kinds of wood with A1 Vietnam!
1. Concept
1.1. Plyboard
- A material made of strips of wood at its core and thin veneers on its top and bottom.
1.2. Plywood
- A material made by stacking and gluing several layers of wood planks to a single sheet.
2. Difference between Plyboard and Plywood.
2.1. Weight
- Plyboard is lighter in weight than Plywood.
- Plywood is heavier than Plyboard because it is made of dense hardwood veneer at the core.
2.2. Moisture Resistant
- Plyboard is easily damaged by water as it is known to retain moisture.
- Plywood exhibits good water resistance.
2.3. Sagging
- If plywood sees its application as long pieces, it tends to bend and sag.
The Plyboard is stiffer than Plywood and therefore it is less prone to warping and sag, when a long piece of wood is required Plyboard is preferred over Plywood.
2.4. Warping, Cracking, and Splitting
- Plywood is generally harder and more resistant to warping and cracking.
- Plywood lasts longer.
- Plyboard should be used when longer pieces of material are needed but are generally less durable.
2.5. Sawing and Cutting
- Plyboard is easier to cut than plywood.
- Due to the cross-grain pattern used to glue strips of plywood together, plywood tends to tear and chip when sawed.
2.6. Uniformity
- Due to the way the plywood is glued together, the pattern is diagonal, so the material tends to be uniform from one side to the other.
- The Plyboard may have small gaps on the inside that are not visible from the outside.
- Plyboard is made of softwood instead of hardwood and Plywood is usually made of hardwood.
3. Which of these two should you choose?
- Choosing the right type of plywood depends on the needs of the user.
- If you are looking for weather-resistant plywood, that can bear some weight and has long-lasting durability then Plywood is the material you want to look for.
- If you are looking for a lightweight and cost-effective building material that is easy to sand and paint, then Plyboard is the right choice.
- Plyboard is used for things like wardrobe panels, doors, desks, benches, and bookshelves.
- Plywood is used for flooring, roofing, wall cladding, cabinets, and other applications.
