The Differences between Melamine and MDF

On the market today, two popular types of wood replacing Plywood are Melamine vs MDF. However, many people do not distinguish and understand the advantages and disadvantages of the two types of wood. Then, let’s learn about these two kinds of wood with A1 Plywood!

1. Melamine

1.1. What is Melamine?

Melamine is an industrial wood but is covered with an additional layer of Melamine on the surface of the material. Their structure usually consists of 2 separate but linked parts, which are:

  • Outer layer: high-quality paper
  • Inner layer: MDF or particle board

1.2. Advantages

  • Be excellent waterproof and scratch resistance.
  • The wooden surface is always smooth, beautiful, and resistant to bacteria, termites, and chemicals during use.
  • It has the characteristics of being strong and tough, avoiding warping and cracking like natural wood.
  • Melamine wood is very popularly produced, with a variety of patterns and designs with about 300 different colors.

1.3. Disadvantages

  • It is very difficult to shape and process interior products.
  • It is easy to burst the glue and open the wooden plank if exposed to water for a long time.

1.4. Application

Normally, we will use moisture-resistant Melamine-coated chipboard to make kitchen cabinets. These kitchen cabinet models have natural colors, and diverse wood grain, along with high moisture resistance and scratch resistance. The price is reasonable and the weight of the cabinet is also quite light.

The MFC wooden bed models often have extremely eye-catching designs, from classic to modern styles with delicate and elegant colors. Moreover, these wooden bed models are quite easy to change direction or move position because of their lightweight.

Wooden furniture products such as tables and chairs, cabinets, shelves, etc. are made from Melamine-coated chipboard and often bring a luxurious feeling thanks to the wood grain and natural color.

Melamine board is also used in the production of wooden door models for bedrooms, and apartments to reduce the weight of high-rise buildings. With high aesthetics beautiful durability and affordable price, Melamine wood door models are preferred by many customers to choose and use.

2. MDF

2.1. What is MDF?

MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. MDF is the common name for 3 types of plywood products.

MDF board is manufactured from hard and soft woods, and composed of the main components: wood fiber powder, paraffin wax, adhesives, and wood protectants to prevent termites, mold, and inorganic fillers. In addition, some hardwood components may be added depending on the manufacturer.

So MDF is a type of wood produced from wood through the process of bonding between wood fibers with glue or chemicals to synthesize.  It has available in different thicknesses, favored in construction and interior.

Made from wood chips, the branches are put into the threshing machine and then put into the crushing machine. At this point, the wood is just small cellulose fibers. These wood fibers are put through the sink to wash away impurities, plastic minerals, etc. Then put into the mixer glue + wood fiber powder (cellulose) + adhesive + paraffin wax + wood protectant, filler powder into muscle.

2.2. Advantages

  • No warping, shrinkage, or termites like natural wood.
  • Smooth flat surface.
  • Easy to paint on the surface or stick other materials on tops such as veneer, laminate, and melamine.
  • There are many and even numbers.
  • The price is much cheaper than natural wood.

2.3. Disadvantages

  • Poor water resistance with conventional MDF.
  • Green MDF is more moisture resistant.
  • MDF has only hardness, not toughness.
  • It cannot make carvings like natural wood.
  • The thickness of the wood is also limited. If making high-thickness objects, many wood panels must be joined.

2.4. Application

  • MDF has many outstanding advantages, so it is often preferred for in-home and office interior designs.
  • MDF is used to produce furniture such as wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, TV shelves, shoe cabinets, and beds.
  • Use for home or document cabinets, desks, and office shelves in office furniture.
  • Moisture-resistant MDF is suitable for some outdoor requirements or for use in wet places such as lavabo cabinets and kitchen cabinets.

3. Frequently asked Questions

3.1. Is Gorilla Glue Good for MDF?

  • Since Gorilla Wood Glue is relatively versatile, it may work correctly for your medium-density fiberboard.
  • Joints are suitable for use on hardwood, softwood, and composite materials. For this reason, you can be sure to get the proper tack.
  • If you are working in woodworking, you will discover that this product is effective on metal, ceramic, glass, foam, and other materials.

3.2. How To Stick The MDF Boards Together?

  • Step 1: Start by laying your wood layers on top of each other. The purpose of this is to check compliance. You should try to pre-drill or bond a few holes for screws on the board.
  • Step 2: Separate the MDF boards and spread some glue evenly on them. Make sure you don’t apply too little or too much glue to the surface. Since you are dealing with a piece of wood, the surface area will be a large area. Therefore, you need to take those steps as quickly and calmly as possible.
  • Step 3: Carefully place one plate on top of another. At this point, you can continue by placing the screw where you originally drilled, especially for a large plate. Remember that you can use super glue instead of clamps. However, if you have clamps, you don’t need to use super glue for this process. If you are using Gorilla Glue, it will take about 2 hours to dry.
  • Step 4: Use water to clean the dried glue.
